an unprecendented camorra live execution footage: the easiness in killing, the disturbing serentiy of the witnesses.

– italian version (if you understand italian, try this, ’cause Roberto Saviano’s comments make the difference)

– CNN version (if you don’t undersand italian, here’s a CNN coverage, emphasizing the disturbing serenity)

Even by the mafia’s brutal standards, the killing of a man smoking a cigarette outside a central Naples bar in broad daylight was shocking in its ruthlessness. Victim’s last cigar, a father who passes by holding the hand of his little girl and then walks away…

But perhaps more disturbing is the reaction of witnesses, who can be seen in a video that has been released by Naples prosecutors in an unprecedented step to try and to find the killer. As the Camorra hitman dispatches his victim with clinical efficiency, a bystander casually checks her lottery scratch card and walks away. Others peer at the body and continue about their business as if the shooting was a normal part of daily life.

The CCTV footage and the aftermath of the crime give a troubling insight into the extent of the Naples mafia’s control of their territory. Although the hit took place on 11 May this year, and the face of the killer is clearly visible on the recording, with witnesses present, investigators have so far met with silence. Till today, when they made it public.

Journalist Roberto Saviano (the one commenting the first footage), who has a permanent armed escort since exposing the activities of the Naples mafia in his best selling book Gomorrah, called the killing a “classic Camorra hit, very well planned and executed without fanfare”. He added that the video “shows what little value these people have for human life,” in a recorded commentary posted on la Repubblica’s website. “The thing that strikes you,” he said, “is the absolute serenity of the killer.”

I really recommend further reading on Roberto Saviano’s (second photo) bestseller story. It has quite an interesting background tale.

That’s terrible! The way people just carried on as if it was normal. I never cease to be horrified by humans and the way they behave sometimes!!

    • that’s only because the Camorra and Cosa Nostra are pretty “normal” for italians. just like street shootings in Bronx. it’s not necessarily the human nature, it’s just the fact that those people passing by know they will be next if they look back. the wiseguys control entire cities, lots of politicians and authorities. many journalists, prosecutors and police officials were killed for trying to expose this reality. roberto saviano – that journalist/writer i wrote about – is now 24 hours/day under police surveillance; the mob families in Neaples told the newspapers that they will kill him for that book he wrote. and they will get him, eventually. 😦

      • PurpleT

That’s kind of how i meant the comment. It’s horrifying that such things are seen as normal, and so people just carry on. I agree with your point about people being killed if the look back, or interfere in any way.
I have a lot of respect for the journalists, and others, who try to expose what happens in such places.

A couple of years or so ago i met a young Canadian woman. She was a videographer/investigative journalist. Apparently she’d worked under cover within the Japanese mafia when only 17. She’d had two attempts on her life in Thailand by the people she’d been there to interview. She’s such a quiet and unassuming type of person, and really nice to spend time with, yet she’d already had a very colourful life.
I’ve seen some of her work on TV since then.

      • it’s hard to tell what would you do if you were that person with the kid… i mean, if i were lonely, i’d go there and see if he’s at least alive. but if it would be about my kido… i dunno, i’ve always thought that parents are different than the rest of the people. i don’t think that a person with a kid would care about any other life than their kid’s life. yeah, it’s nice to say you would jump there and kill that bastard on the spot, but… would you really, knowing your kido is all alone behind you?

as for your friend… what an interesting lady! i’d love to see/read the result of her incredible work. and i’d LOVE to have that kind of life, meaning i’d love a job i could easily confuse with pure passion and i’d love to have a real and useful goal. i know it’s dangerous and so on, but i would just love my job, i would cherish every second of what i do, therefore it wouldn’t really matter if one day i were shot dead. cause… in the end the passion is the single thing that matters. at least according to me. i think this time you’ll find many spelling errors and really bizarre sentences :)), but i gotta give away for a few hours my pc. i’m goneee

It is hard to know how you’d react with a child. I know friends are very protective of their kids. I don’t have children, but my last girlfriend had a miscarriage a few years ago, and i know how bad that made me feel, but this sort of thing is different. It’s not something against your control, you can get away and keep your child safe, and i guess that’s what people would do.

It’s nice to think that we can be the hero, that we can do something to help. I’ve jumped in a few times when people have been assaulted. Sometimes people are so surprised they just back off. I’ve also kept back and done nothing as there’s fear of being hurt badly. I’ve been beaten very badly on occasions because i dared to be different. I know how horrible it is.
I think that you’re more likely to do something if you don’t think about it. Having time to think give time for the fear to take hold.

I lost touch with Nicole. It’s a shame as she’s a very cool, but tough woman, and yes, she was interesting.
I met her at the 2008 Climate Camp. My mate Gary had been chatting to her online and so she came over for it. Gary had also got me to go along and join him on the photography side.
It was quite a bizarre week with a lot of police brutality. Illegal stop and search on everyone coming and going to the camp. With helicopters flying over all night, and police charging the gates some days, and threatening to on the rest of them, very early every morning, so people didn’t get much sleep for a week.
I think Nicole was quite shocked for a while as this is England, and that sort of thing just ain’t supposed to happen here…..lol

Ooops, i’m getting sidetracked……and if i carry on with that i could sidetracked for quite some time…

Doing something that you love, and is important to you, is very fulfilling. It takes us back to the photojournalists again. I guess it’s partly why i liked the Don McCullin exhibition so much. A fair few of his colleagues died. They were doing what they loved, and believed they were making a difference, and i think they did, but McCullin was one who survived, but it’s scarred him badly. It must be hard to live with that mental scarring.
I don’t know if i could do it.

Anyway, i think it’s time for me to be goneee 🙂

    • i’ve read and i was about to answer, but i’ve changed my mind a lil bit 😀 i’m hearing some steps behind me 😀 … i’d better go back to bed. 😀 😀

      • PurpleT

Yes, back to bed so you can come back nice and well 🙂

      • i couldn’t help but sneak a book under my bed. 😀 i’ve read a little bit instead of sleeping. if only they knew what evil things i’m doing while they think i’m asleep. : )))))

  3. PurpleT

Ooooh a book under the bed. How dastardly you are 🙂

    • dastardly and muttley. i think this was a cartoon. aww, i miss the old cartoon network. 😦

      • PurpleT

Dastardly and Muttley were in The Wacky Races 🙂

I have a friend who uses the name Muttley. Apparently his parents had dogs when he was a kid, and he felt like they were all treated like family, so he was just like the dogs, so he said he was half dog and called himself Muttley 🙂
He’s a very funny guy, and a really nice guy 🙂

      • haha. i want to be a dog, too. i’ve called this blog reservoir dogs not only ’cause of tarantino’s movie, but also ’cause i love dogs. but not dogs with a home. just homeless, stray dogs. i don’t feed them and stuff like that, i just like to stare into their eyes and to let them stare into my eyes. my parents and friends are often afraid of them, but i just stupidly go there and have a blast while playing with them. :))

  4. PurpleT

I used to get followed home by a stray dog. I’d spend hours late at night just sitting with it, making a fuss and playing with it……

I had a dog (our family have always had dogs). Mine was half Border Collie. She was a tiny ball of black fur when i got her. She was so gorgeous, and damned clever too, i guess that’s why Border Collies make good sheep dogs, they’re really smart!
I used to take her out climbing with my mates. She’d watch us climb and then knew which way we’d be coming down, whether by a short path, or climb down and easy route. She’d run round and bark at us to come down 🙂
She was my best friend 🙂

    I love dogs 🙂

    • awww, how cute! mine was Cora (named after her mother… d’oh). she died in 2009. she was so damn smart and sooo damn funny. i don’t think i’ll find again a dog like that… in fact, we had two of them. one was cora and the other is vulpitza (named like that ’cause she’s like a tiny fox. “vulpe” = fox, “vulpita” = foxie). vulpita is still here, she has big brown eyes and she’s so, but so playful. i love her just as much. 🙂

My dog was called Vela. I got the name from an astronomy book i have. There’s a super nova remnant called Vela. I thought it looked beautiful, and she was a very beautiful puppy 🙂

My mum’s dog is called Sam. He wants to play A LOT! He’s also ridiculously affectionate and wants to be hugged most of the time. Though he’s not the brightest of dogs i’ve met, he is lovable 🙂

      • 1. “He’s also ridiculously affectionate … Though he’s not the brightest of dogs i’ve met” :)))) i just pictured a doggie i used to know. :)))

        2. I don’t know Vela, so it doesn’t exist. 😀 i’m kidding. i used to be obsessed with space and i still like to believe i know all the names out there, but it seems i’ve missed Vela. 😛

        3. right now i’m struggling to open your site, but this internet is driving me nuts. i’ve managed to read only my name, which is surprisingly … correct! 😀 you didn’t double the L. 😀 that makes me ridiculously happy. 😀

  5. PurpleT

    1. I’ll have to show you a photo of him sometime, he is pretty cute, if a little daft 🙂

    2. I was always a bit obsessed with space too. I can vaguely remember my parents getting me and my brother up late at night to watch the first moon landing on tv. It’s one of my earliest memories. I also remember the later moon landings and looking at the moon and imagining i could see them up there 🙂
This is the photo of Vela that i saw in the book http://www.windows2universe.org/the_universe/images/vela_b_image.html

    3. That’s a shame…I dedicated it to you seeing as i took the photos for you.
I checked your name from the wp address 🙂 I try to get things right if i can 🙂
I’m glad it makes you happy 🙂 🙂

    • 1) haha. can’t wait. 🙂 2) pretty awesome. i have even a fav nebula: eagle. :))) fortunately, i can’t name my future dog eagle. 😀 though… that would be pretty… original. 3) the happiest. 😀 my university used to have for the summer a lot of guest students, guest teachers etc. my name is just usual (unfortunately)… but just imagine the way they write and pronounce names as cătălina, anca, radu, georgeta, luminiţa, claudiu, ionela etc. :))) 4) i HATE the internet i have here. i’m just way too curious to see the pics. :((( and my phone won’t display them either. I HATE, HATE, HATE the internet here.

      • PurpleT

        4. I guess you’ll just have to be patient…. 😦
        3. Over here your name isn’t so usual, in fact i don’t think i’ve ever met anyone with it. I quite like it….
        2. Go on, call your future dog eagle 🙂
I once knew a woman who called her dog Juniper so her very macho husband had to go out calling it 🙂
        1. Ok, i’ll get some photos 🙂

      • 4. I guess you’ll just have to be patient…. 😦 NO, I DON’T HAVE TO BE PATIENT. 😀 3. Over here your name isn’t so usual, in fact i don’t think i’ve ever met anyone with it. I quite like it…. I ONLY LIKE GABRIEL. GABRIELA IS SO… JANE DOE’S BEST FRIEND. 😀 2. Go on, call your future dog eagle 🙂 I once knew a woman who called her dog Juniper so her very macho husband had to go out calling it 🙂 I’LL CALL IT ZAIRA. MY NEWEST NAME-OBSESSION. ;D 1. Ok, i’ll get some photos 🙂

  6. PurpleT

    1. 🙂
    2. Nice name 🙂
    3. JANE DOE’S BEST FRIEND……i’ve never met Jane Doe, but i hear her best friend is really nice 🙂
    4. I guess you decided to not be patient then 🙂

    • 1. 🙂 2. zaira? yesss! 3. neah. they’re all liars. 4. yes, i’m patient… i really am. :((

  7. PurpleT

    4. I’m also very patient, when i really have to be, but i hate having to wait..!! Though when i had use of a darkroom i would happily spend all day working on a my photos to get them right 🙂
    3. all liars? oh well, such a shame….
    2. i’ve seen the name with an S, but not with Z. i quite like both ways 🙂
    1. 🙂

    • 4. darkrooms… awww. my dad used to be – among other stuff – a photographer. so once or twice i’ve stepped in a darkroom. my dad loved to give me photo-lessons, while my mum loved to read me poetry and short stories – i mean when i was really little. she used to love litterature, he used to love photography. they still do, i guess. 🙂 and i… well… i… will go to bed. 😀 3. yeah, it’s a shame. 2. zaira was some MTV-dude’s girlfriend. i used to love her name. so original. 1. 🙂

      • PurpleT

        1. 🙂
        2. yep, it’s certainly not a name you come across every day is it….
        3. yeah, a real shame!
        4. I was going to have a darkroom in the cellar of a house i once bought with a girlfriend. She was going to have a kiln one side so she could make pots, and i’d have a darkroom the other side. Unfortunately she decided to “move on” so i never got my darkroom 😦 If i had a place for one i’d use film again as well as digital. I could see myself going missing for days at a time if i had a darkroom. I used to lose track of time very easily 🙂

      • 1. 🙂 🙂 🙂 😛 2. zaira and talin/taylin. 😀 3. yeah… i know. 😦 4. most people want to have a jacuzzi, not a darkroom. welcome to the odd group. 😉

  8. PurpleT

    1. 🙂 🙂 🙂 😀
    2. Talin/Taylin…? New to me…..but yeah, i think that could grow on me.. 🙂
    3. Sigh! just can’t trust some people…..
    4. A jacuzzi? nah, they’re only good for washing the prints in……i think most people who know me would say i’ve been a part of the odd group for loooong time 🙂 🙂

    • 1. 🙂 🙂 🙂 😀 2. Talin/Taylin…? New to me…..but yeah, i think that could grow on me.. 🙂 talin was the name of a spaceship from a movie i used to watch. 😀 and taylin is a spin off, let’s say. 😛 3. Sigh! just can’t trust some people….. true, true. 😦 4. A jacuzzi? nah, they’re only good for washing the prints in……i think most people who know me would say i’ve been a part of the odd group for loooong time 🙂 🙂 define “odd”. i was actually planning to get upset when you have called my pylons thing… odd. 😛 then i realized you meant it in the way i would have meant it. 😛

      • PurpleT

        4. define “odd”….i think we both now know what “odd” means :-)”i was actually planning to get upset when you have called my pylons thing… odd. then i realized you meant it in the way i would have meant it.” I’m glad you didn’t get upset as i might not have had the pleasure of chatting with you, and that would have been sad 😦 So i’m glad you realised i meant it the way you would, so all is good 🙂 😀
        3. terrible isn’t it…..
        2. A spaceship from a film :-)I would never have known…and i like the…err…spin off 😀
        1:-):D:-):D:-):D

      • 4. well… sometimes i just love being a jerk and misunderstand things. and it was pretty much the same with you. it was all like: “do i want to understand he called me “odd”… or i’m too lazy to get into a discussion?” :)) i was too lazy that day. sorry. 😀 3. terrible. totally. 2. … Aeryn is another interesting name. Aeryn was from the same movie. “Farscape”, i think. Aeryn … i totally forgot about Aeryn. 1:-):D:-):D:-):D 😛

      • PurpleT

        1. :-):D:-):D 😉 ;D
        2. I know Aeryn. I never really watched Farscape, but saw some of it. I must have heard the name, but never got the spaceship name…
        3. truly awful!
        4. “i was too lazy that day. sorry” i think we all have days like that 🙂

      • 1. :-):D:-):D 😉 ;D ;)) 2. I know Aeryn. I never really watched Farscape, but saw some of it. I must have heard the name, but never got the spaceship name… Talin was Moyra’s son. 😀 Moyra was the mother-spaceship. 😀 why do i bothered to keep that in mind…? i don’t know. 😀 3. truly awful! AWFUL! caps and bold 4. “i was too lazy that day. sorry” i think we all have days like that 🙂 oh… really. i can be a real jerk sometimes. i totally love to misunderstand. 😦

can’t believe i was up till now. :(((((( they used me. :((( no more online-brainstormings from now on. :-l

      • PurpleT

        4. I don’t mind misunderstandings, just as long as i don’t fall out with people over something. It can be funny though. I once turned up for a life drawing class, got changed, and when i disrobed they were quite shocked. “Ooooh no, we don’t want nudity! How awful!”. I knew the woman who had been invited to teach them and she was as shocked as me that they wanted non nude life drawing and hadn’t made it clear. A group of 70ish year old women about to faint was a sight to behold…..lol
        3. DREADFUL!! (not bold for some reason..?) something should be done about it…
        2. why do i bothered to keep that in mind…? Why indeed? but it gave you a good name, so worth it 😀
        1. 😛 🙂 🙂 :D:D 😀 😛 😉

      • PurpleT

Online brainstorming!! That reminds me, i need to sort a few things out with people for photography trips….

Hope you slept well in the end 😀

      • 4. I like to misunderstand just cause I’m a jerk. I’ve got no real philosophy behind it. The only person that has actually beaten me at my own game was/is my ex-boss. I used to drive him nuts. NUTS. And instead of doing the same with me, he was just… playing nice. Then it was me who went nuts. 😀 I respect him so much. 3. HORROR! 😀 2. shiloh. 😀 1. 😛 🙂 🙂 :D:D 😀 😛 😉 :)))

      4. I bet it’s quite fun talking to you 😀 I used to like to misunderstand a teacher, who retired a couple of years ago. I’d always do the wrong poses and wind him up until he’d swear at me. It became a bit of a game between us 😛

      • 1. *<:3_)~ (this is a mouse) 2. Tirion…. Usaghy. 3. POLITICS! damn. you're better than me. 😀 4. • 1. now i understad why i was asked what does the “look both ways before crossing the street” post meant. it was a video. =))) and the whole gogol bordello post was also meant to be a video. :)) ok, from now on i won’t use anymore my HTML skills. :)) i will use WP’s automatic dashboard. 😀 2.
